Description:Alabama - Thunderpussy - Discography (1998 - 2007)
with exclusive split record with Orange Goblin and Halfway to gone

Alabama Thunderpussy is a band from Richmond (Virginia) that plays stoner-rock full of colossal riffs and screamed vocals, but at a faster tempo. One of the inspirations of Rise Again (Man's Ruin, 1998) seems to be Motorhead, and that sets the band apart from the pack of stoner wolves (Falling Behind, Jackass, Fever 103). After the EP River City Revival (Man's Ruin, 1999), containing Dryspell, the album Constellation (Man's Ruin, 2000) offered a more sophisticated version of their style (Middle Finger Salute) and betrayed another key influence, Lynyrd Skynyrd (Ambition). The bulk, of course, remained ferocious killers like Crying Out Loud, Second Wind, Negligence, Foul Play.

Staring At The Divine (Relapse, 2002) alternates between old and new, between Pantera-like sludge-fest Shapeshifter and rockers like Ol' Unfaithful (which sounds like Black Sabbath covering Foreigner's Jukebox Hero), between the dejavu riffs of Whore Adore and Esteem Fiend and the full-throttle charge of Motor-Ready (possibly their masterpiece). The Led Zeppelin-derived power-ballad Twilight Arrival and the six-minute psychodrama S.S.D.D. extend the language beyond its roots.
Vocalist Johnny Throckmorton, guitarists Asechiah Bogden and Erik Larson, drummer Bryan Cox and bassist Sam Krivanec constitute a formidable line-up that can take up much tougher challenges than the ordinary stoner/sludge stereotypes.

After Throckmorton left the band, Larson released two solo albums, the ambitious The Resounding (Small Stone, 2003), almost entirely played by him, Faith, Hope, Love (2005), a more conventional stoner-rock work, also entirely played by him, and joined the supergroup Birds Of Prey, that debuted with Weight of the Wound (Relapse, 2006).

Alabama Thunderpussy continued to release albums but they sounded like side projects. Fulton Hill (Relapse, 2004) featured vocalist Johnny Weils. Open Fire (Relapse, 2007) featured vocalist Kyle Thomas.
