Icethrone

Italian Icethrone seems like a classic example of a band that recorded an album much too soon. Founded in September 2009 after the split of Tales Of Winter, they already launch a debut album now, while this half an hour of music can be considered as a weak demo. Firstly, in these hard times you do not release scarcely thirty minutes music as a CD, secondly the recordings are muffled and messy. Even concerning the way of playing of this five-piece, there are quite a few catches. It is as if they just put one of their first rehearsals on a disc (recorded in the studio of a guitarist).
And they call this Viking death metal with Amon Amarth as huge influence, while Hypocrisy and Dismember had their influence too? Well, never trust what they put in info sheets of the label. They proudly announce the first three songs as a ‘Ragnarok Saga’. Wait and see… In the middle of quite okay guitar leads and brackish drums, Algiz starts his random low-pitched growling parts. A bit thunder and lightning, a spoken parts and some semi-acoustic guitar notes and that’s it. But where is the song? After that it even gets worse. ‘End Of All’ is a jumble and dull and ‘Winter Nights’ is sung very out of tune. Since besides these so-so grunts, it gets really irritating when bassist Munin tries any ‘clean’ vocals. Just listen to those crooning voices in ‘The Gambler’. This is really bad. Let us forget this immediately.
