Gwar have played various music styles throughout their career including punk, hard rock, and metal.

Gwar started in 1984 under the name Gwaaarrrgghhlllgh. Gwaaarrrgghhlllgh served as the costumed opening act to the members' main punk group Death Piggy. After realizing that the audience showed up for Gwaaarrrgghhlllgh, and left before Death Piggy's set began, the name was shortened to Gwar, and became the main focus. The band occasionally performs as Rawg, essentially Gwar without the costumes, often due to limited stage space.

In most cases, new members assume the roles of the already-established stage characters. It should be noted that BalSac, Jaws of Death, and BalSac, the Jaws of Death are three different characters.

In addition to the band, and various live musicians, stage shows can feature dozens of other costumed stage hands, actors, and dancers, collectively referred to as Slaves.

Although it is widely believed that "GWAR" is an acronym for 'God What an Awful Racket,' the name, as stated above, is in fact short for Gwaaarrrgghhlllgh, which was the name the band used for their first handful of shows. David Brockie has also stated that "it really doesn't mean anything except Gwar."

The band are "space pirates called the Scumdogs of the Universe that inhabit planet Earth," or at least that's what their stage act is. They portray pirate aliens all the time. The idea of the costumes was actually supposed to be a mere joke during the band's early days (when they were more of a punk band.) David Brockie knew someone who was making independent movies whom also made very superb costumes, and asked if, for one show, Gwar could use the costumes. To this day, they still use the costumes, and that's what's made the band famous.

In 2012, they covered Kansas' "Carry on my wayward son" for The Onion's A.V. Undercover series.

In 2013, they covered Billy Ocean's “Get Outta My Dreams, Get Into My Car” for The Onion's A.V. Undercover series.
