Falconer - Self -Titled Debut

Falconer began after the splitting up of the viking metal band Mithotyn. Guitarist Stefan Weinerhall wanted to continue making folk-influenced metal music, but with clean vocals instead of the harsh style used in Mithotyn. In 1999 he began recording demo tapes, performing the guitar and bass lines himself, while using a drum machine and playing the vocal melodies on guitar. When recording a full demo tape, he chose the name Falconer and enlisted the help of Mathias Blad as a session vocalist for the demo. Mattias had never sung for a rock or metal band before, and in fact was enjoying a relativley succesful career as a stage singer.

The four-track demo was recorded in early 2000, still with artificial drums, and was passed around various record companies until Metal Blade offered a deal. With the immediate future of the band secure, Stefan enlisted the help of his old Mithotyn bandmate Karsten Larsson as the band's drummer. Mathias also agreed to stay on as the full-time singer. The self-titled debut album was recorded and released in 2001, with both bass and guitar still being performed by Stefan. The second album, "Chapters From A Vale Forlorn", was recorded a year later with the same line-up as the debut.

It was in 2002 that the band were offered the chance to play some concerts, (including the opening slot for Wacken Open Air), something that they had not seriously considered doing before. After some agonising, the trio decided to perform the gigs offered to them and recruited the help of bass player Peder Johansson and guitarist Anders Johansson - not related either to each other or the more famous Johansson brothers - to complete their live line up. Stefan and Karsten at this point decided they wanted the band to be less studio-based and to do proper tours for their future releases, so Peder and Anders were recruited as full time band members.

Mathias Blad could not commit the necessary time to fully-blown tours, with his priority still being his stage career. Rather than hiring a seperate vocalist to tour, it was amicably agreed that he should leave the band at this stage. He was replaced by Kristoffer Göbel of Destiny (Swe), but still contributed to the third album, "The Sceptre Of Deception", by providing some guest vocals.

After touring the new album, differences between the band members led to the Johanssons leaving Falconer. A new bass player was found quite soon in the form of Magnus Linhardt. Finding a new guitarist took a little longer, but eventually Falconer settled on Jimmy Hedlund.

After a generally disappointed reaction by fans to the change in style on the fourth album, "Grime Vs. Grandeur", Stefan and Karsten decided to return to the folk-influenced sound of the previous albums, re-hiring Mathias Blad and firing Kristoffer Göbel was fired to make way for him.
