THERION was formed in Upplands Väsby (a suburb to Stockholm, Sweden) in 1987 by Christofer Johnsson, under the name ”Blitzkrieg”. Chris was at that time playing the bass and did the vocals. The line-up consisted besides him of Peter Hansson on guitar and Oskar Forss on drums.

Peter and Chris had been jamming together in another group (a ”jam-group” rather than a band would be correct to say) earlier that year and Chris had been trying to put something together with various people earlier, before Blitzkrieg finally became a reality. Oskar was an old school mate of his.

THERION always surpasses itself with its many turns in music direction, always being refreshed by new members, yet never stopped being the brainchild of Christofer Johnson and his endless ideas.

2007’s “Gothic Kabbalah” was another great album in the band’s catalogue and in the tour that followed THERION consisted of mainman Christofer Johnsson and Kristian Niemann on guitars, Johann Niemann on bass and Petter Karlsson on drums. Vocals were handled by Snowy Shaw (King Diamond, Mercyful Fate), Mats Leven, Thomas Vikstrom, Lori Lewis and Katarina Lilja.

“Live Gothic” was recorded in Warsaw, Poland on February 14th, 2007 and catches the band in good form in front of a rather warm audience.

The setlist covers the band’s history from “Theli” and on with songs selected from the albums after this one based mostly on their latest release. THERION sound in high spirits and the performance is equivalent of their productivity and efficiency in studio albums. It was recently announced that all members left the band, except Johnson of course, who will decide how the new profile of THERION will look like. “Live Gothic” is representative of the band’s sound for the last three or four albums and it deserves a place among them as the end of this era and the beginning of a new one.
