Quote:
Blind Illusion, formed in 1979 by-then-high-school student Marc Biederman teamed up with Alvin Petty on bass and drummer Bret Hern during their formative years in El Sobrante, California. Originally a progressive band in the vein of Rush and ELP, Blind Illusion forged a strong following in the young local music scene that included a young Kirk Hammett, and soon to be Blind Illusion bassist Les Claypool. By the early 1980s, the band's lineup incorporated another local, featured vocalist Dave Godfrey (White), now with Heathen and the mighty Les Claypool on bass.
As with all young bands, their membership changed and brought in others such as guitarist Pat Woods, bassist Gene Gilson and drummer Mike Miner (formerly of local speed metal band Blizzard with Larry Lalonde.) along their young musical journey. The thrash scene was emerging and the band slowly made a stylistic change to heavier, more thrash oriented sound. Soon Blind Illusion became major players in the local San Francisco Bay thrash scene, but retained much of their progressive influence. This lineup recorded many demos and gigged heavily which largely increased Blind Illusion's popularity. In the mid 1980s, David Godfrey left to join local thrash titans Heathan and Pat Woods briefly took over vocal duties before he himself left Blind Illusion.
Mark Biedermann took over vocal duties. After a brief hiatus form the band, bassist Les Claypool came back into the mix replaced Gene on bass, adding a new musical influence into the band's bass lines. They released a demo that was produced by none other than Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett. The band soon incorporated the talents pf a second guitarist John Marshall, former guitar tech for Kirk and James in Metallica (who would later join Metal Church). After John’s departure, Mike Miner suggested old band and former Possessed guitarist Larry Lalonde and the final lineup for Blind Illusion was complete. In the summer of 1987, after many successful local shows and various demos, the band finally got a record deal they had long deserved with Combat Records.

Their first recording by the band is currently their only official release, Released in 1988, The San Asylum received much praise from not only the thrash community, but from the general music community at large. The album is still considered a thrash classic, featuring now famous tracks such as "Kamikaze" and "Smash the Crystal".
The band went on a very successful tour in support of the album but then began to fall apart around 1989. Soon after, Mr. Claypool left to further pursue the much renowned band, which would become, Primus. Larry Lalonde soon followed Les to formalize the final Primus lineup and their success is now a part of music history.
Marc began working on a new album in 1989, The Medicine Show, with other musicians but the sessions never satisfied his vision of what the music should be and the album was never released. Marc, an accomplished martial artist, took time to pursue other interests and took a brief sabbatical to China to study the ancient art of the masters. Some time has past and 2008 brings a new Blind Illusion with new members and a new sound. Marc returns on guitar and vocals and the new lineup are rounded out by Robert Nystrom on drums and Danny Harcourt on bass. A new album is in the works and the band is actively seeking live bookings once again. pYzam, Look at these other Layouts! |
