Anthrax was formed in 1981 in New York, USA. They were managed by Johnny Z (Jon Zazula), head of the indie label Megaforce Records and in 1984 they released their debut album called "Fistful Of Metal". They band underwent several line-up changes with the members going on to form other bands with a similar thrash metal sound. With increasing popularity Anthrax signed with Island Records in 1985 (actually Megaforce merged with Island but remained as the label name). In the early days they were a rather traditional 80's metal band but they soon developed their unique and groundbreaking speed/thrash metal sound which made them one of the biggest American thrash metal bands alongside Metallica and Megadeth.
