Hard rock band from Morecambe, England formed in 2011 and originally named Jerusalem. Wytch Hazel began with the lineup of Colin Hendra on guitars and vocals, Josh Winnard on guitars, Cornelius Corkery on bass, and Aaron Ray on drums. In 2012, the band released their debut EP, titled The Truth, which came out independently.

With 2020’s Pentecost putting Wytch Hazel’s feel-good hard rock toward even more upbeat ends, it only makes sense for the band to double down with their fourth installment. Sacrament certainly reflects the success of a fine-tuned formula but also a degree of balance compared to previous outings. The pacing feels more level overall with the fast songs not going as hard and the folk elements are more subtle, yet the album keeps from feeling too middle of the road.

It certainly helps that the songwriting maintains their now signature variety and relentless infectious hooks. “Angel of Light” makes the most of its Thin Lizzy flourishes with a giddy bass-driven trot and sweet thin guitars while “Strong Heart” and “Deliver Us” are stadium-ready anthems with inspirational marches and subtle acoustics backing their stirring choruses.

The band still finds time to play around with their dynamics as “Time and Doubt” serves up some scorching speed, “Endless Battle” has enough motivational spirit to keep its mid-tempo pace from feeling too subdued, and the closing one-two of “Future is Gold” and “Digging Deeper” allows their folk rock to return in full whimsy.

Wytch Hazel is at an interesting point in their trajectory where you essentially know what to expect from them but it’s still enjoyable enough to feel fresh. Sacrament might be the tightest iteration of their formula yet, not quite hitting the highest highs of the last album but still full of equally catchy songs and enthusiastic playing. If you’ve not gotten around to checking them out yet, this is as good of a place to start as any.
